Sri Ramana Maharshi — Biography, Teachings & Timeline

Biography

A life lived in silence.

Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi was born Venkataraman Iyer on 30 December 1879 in Tirucchi, Tamil Nadu. At the age of sixteen, a sudden experience of death — reading a passage on how the body is laid out — opened for him the direct awareness of the deathless Self.

He left home, journeyed to the sacred hill of Arunachala, and remained there for the rest of his life. Through his presence, his silence, and his gentle words to seekers, he pointed always to the same direct path: “Who am I?”.
